Marie D.
Operations Manager
“The staff we work with are amazing and inspire you to be better human beings, here and outside of work.”
Why did you accept a job here?
I was already familiar with the staff in the department and enjoyed working with them as an outside contractor. I felt empowered and excited to join the hospital team, which was directly helping the patients. I saw it as an opportunity to help the patients more directly by acting as their advocate.
What do you do at Rush?
I am the Operations Manager of Hematology and Oncology, a 22-physician practice that is a multi-faceted ambulatory care clinic. In addition to physician visits provided in the exam room, we have three infusion areas, a procedure room and a comprehensive clinic program. I oversee the non-clinical staff and also ensure that patient flow and customer satisfaction are optimized through our processes and policies.
Describe the people you work with.
I really like the people I work with. It’s a very collegial environment, with people of different backgrounds, education and job titles. Everyone has a common goal of meeting the patients’ needs, and everyone is passionate about their work. It gives you a sense of empowerment to work alongside professionals who really care about what they are doing.
Tell us about a good day at work.
It touches me when a patient tells me of an experience with a physician or staff member – it has me in awe of the humanity and expertise demonstrated. One patient told me of a Rush physician calling him on the weekend, and they talked for over an hour – you could hear the amazement in his voice, but I know this was not out of character for this particular physician. The staff we work with are amazing and inspire you to be better human beings, both at and outside of work.
Share something you've heard about patient care at Rush.
They say they love the people and the staff, and that everyone is so nice to them. They also say that we have a family atmosphere and that they feel like a part of our family. Compared to other places patients have been for consultation or a second opinion, they say that when they come here, they feel like a person who means something.
